Cysts are balloon like growths under the skin filled with trapped oil, skin cells and debris. There are many different types of cysts. Inflamed cysts can form as part of acne, which can be painful and can cause scarring.
Sometimes cysts settle down on their own, but often they are treated with a combination of topical acne medicines, controlled extractions, oral medications, injections of cortisone, drainage or surgical removal depending on the location and severity.
Avoiding trauma or squeezing your own cysts is very important to prevent rupturing the cyst and pushing the cyst material deeper into the skin where it can cause more damage and possibly lead to an infection and permanent scarring.
