The Candela Vbeam offers another option in acne
and acne scar reduction without the pain of
injections or down time of more aggressive treatments.
By using low energy, the Vbeam gently heats below the
skin’s surface leading to the production of new
healthy collagen, decreased redness and less bacteria
over time. The result is a gradual clearing of acne red
marks, existing acne lesions and acne scars as well as
the appearance of tighter pores. Your skin will have
a healthy glow and smoother surface texture.
Because there is no “cure” for acne, the severity
of your acne and scars will determine the number of treatments
needed. Dr. Roberts recommends repeating treatments every
3 – 4 weeks until your acne is controlled and the
scars minimized. In some patients noticeable improvements
have been seen as early as the second or third treatment.
Each individual situation may vary and it is best to discuss
yours with Dr. Roberts.
Vbeam acne treatments are another way to supplement your
current acne treatment, improve your skin more quickly and
soften acne scars. It is not a one time fix or cure
for acne; however, by following the treatment program Dr.
Roberts prescribes, and taking care of your overall health,
improvements can be maximized. A “touch-up” procedure
may be needed on occasion to maintain results.
Strict sun avoidance before and between treatments is a must to
prevent burning the skin and healing with changes in skin
color. Dr. Roberts advises all her patients to avoid self
tanning products 6 – 8 weeks before treatment and
stop blood thinners 2 weeks prior to prevent bruising (see
our patient education section for a full listing). All
patients must be off Accutane for 6 months before starting
treatments for acne scars.
Most patients describe the sensation as a mild hot snapping
feel. Depending on the sensitivity of the area treated,
some patients opt to use topical numbing cream. (available
in our office or from the pharmacy).
Following this gentle laser treatment, the area(s) may be
slightly pink, and feel warm like a mild sunburn. Ice compresses
are usually enough to control any discomfort, but occasionally,
topical cortisone cream or anti-inflammatory medication
will be prescribed.
Although Vbeam treatment is probably safe during pregnancy,
Dr. Roberts advises women to wait until they are done breast
feeding and their hormone levels have returned to normal.
If you have a history of fever blisters, please inform Dr.
Roberts so an antiviral medication can be prescribed.
Following Vbeam treatments, we ask patients to avoid anything
that will irritate the skin until healed. Dr. Roberts will
give you a customized skin care regimen to follow after
laser for maximum results.
The Vbeam is not recommended for patients who are darkly
pigmented or suntanned. Because the laser will react
with skin pigment, the risk of healing with skin discoloration
is increased.
