When you look in the mirror in the morning, do you ever wonder if your acne and acne scars will ever go away? Are you tired and frustrated of trying to control your cystic acne with endless remedies, and still not getting the results you hoped for?

If so, an innovative procedure called Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) may just be for you.

One of the most popular usages of PDT is treating moderate to severe cystic acne and acne scars. Prior to Photodynamic Acne Treatment, the best available treatment option for cystic acne was Accutane.  However, with Accutane there are many potential side effects including birth defects, liver abnormalities, depression, hair loss and changes in night vision.  All patients get dryness. In addition, monthly blood tests are needed.

PDT is a process by which a photosensitizing agent called Levulan (ALA) is applied to your skin. ALA is a natural substance found throughout your body in your red blood cells. Once on the skin, ALA concentrates in your oil glands. Using our BLU-U visible light source or a laser, ALA is  “turned on”.   Once turned on, ALA treats acne by killing bacteria and drying up existing acne lesions. Skin oiliness is decreased, and the appearance of pores is minimized.  The entire skin texture improves following PDT. Many patients will experience prolonged benefits and clear skin for up to 6-12 months. Sometimes however, more than one treatment is required depending on your skin.

After PDT, you will experience mild redness, swelling and peeling like a sunburn.  This may last for up to one week. Dr. Roberts and her caring staff will go over a skin care regimen to help you manage the healing phase.

Because ALA stays in the skin for up to 48 hours, your skin will be light sensitive for 1-2 days after treatment. Dr. Roberts will recommend a special sunscreen to use when indoors and outdoors, but will ask you to remain out of the sun during this time period.

Levulan has been used extensively for the treatment of a variety of different skin conditions and is approved by the FDA for the treatment of sun damaged skin and pre-cancerous growths.

Together, Dr. Roberts and PDT can help treat your acne and give you have the vibrant, clear, beautiful, skin you have always wanted.

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Roberts to see if you may be a candidate.
