Have you spent endless money and time shaving, waxing and doing electrolysis to remove unwanted facial and body hair? If the answer is "yes," consider Laser Hair Removal and say “goodbye” to unwanted hair.
Laser Hair Removal works
with amazing precision, by selectively targeting darkly pigmented
hair bulbs, while leaving the surrounding skin intact. The
laser pulse will gently heat and injure or destroy hair bulbs
that are actively growing. Once a hair bulb is completely
destroyed, that individual hair will not grow back. The skin
surface is cooled during the treatment for safety and to
minimize discomfort. Most of Dr. Roberts’ patients
describe the sensation like a hot rubber band being snapped
on your skin. Dr. Roberts recommends applying a topical numbing
cream first to minimize discomfort.
After your treatment, your
skin may develop swollen red goose bumps around the hair
follicle areas. This is a temporary expected effect. In addition,
the treated area may feel sensitive like a mild sunburn.
To relieve this unpleasant feeling, you can use ice, a topical
cortisone cream or an anti-inflammatory medication.
Our hair grows in cycles with
three phases, an active growth phase, a resting phase (when
hairs normally fall out) and a transition phase. Laser Hair
Removal is most effective during the active phase of the
growth cycle. Because our hairs are not all actively growing
at the same time, laser hair removal is not a one-time treatment. At
least 3-5 treatments may be needed to reduce the hair in
a designated area (e.g. arms, legs, bikini, etc.). Ultimately,
the number of total treatments needed depends on your hormonal
status and other factors. Treatments are scheduled
every 4-6 weeks depending on the area treated and the speed
of regrowth.
While most patients are good
candidates for Laser Hair Removal, Dr. Roberts does not recommend
this treatment for the following:
• Pregnant
and/or nursing women, because elevated hormone levels
stimulate hair growth.
• Patients
with blonde, white or gray hair since there is little
pigment for the laser to target.
• Sun
tanned patients until their tan has completely faded.
• Patients
currently taking Accutane. (Once off Accutane for 6-12
months, treatments may begin).
